Gerallt Hughes      


Having completed a BA in Fine Art, Gerallt went on to gain a Masters’ Degree in Design & Art Direction at Manchester Metropolitan University. He established himself as an artist and illustrator, based in North Wales. Gerallt became Chair of the North Wales Art Group, CASC, whose members are all practising artists working on their personal artistic projects, while supporting newly qualified & aspiring artists, helping them arrange exhibitions in the CASC project space, providing advice and networking opportunities. Members of the group also engage with local residents, working together on various ideas, creating art events within the community and have secured funding and support from the Arts Council of Wales.

 

He worked at Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno and Galeri, Caernarfon prior to completing a year’s Internship through joint sponsorship by the Welsh Arts’ Council and Galeri, Caernarfon, spending time at Dundee, The Sage, Newcastle, Compton Verney and Gold Coast Art Centre, Australia before being appointed Public Space Programmer at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff in 2013, where he is currently based.

 

His experiences are varied; successes include:

 

·     An early residency in West Wales at Powerhouse Gallery Llandysul, where he completed a number of successful & lively community workshops & presentations, working with residents of all ages, to create a scroll, depicting the locality’s rich heritage.

  Thematic educational art workshops at primary & secondary level over the years, seeing the importance of his role in inspiring and nurturing pupils’ interest & curiosity in the world around them and their personal creation of art, leading & giving them confidence to explore possibilities whilst creating visual records in the classroom or in the gallery. He has lead past workshops at Wales’s largest publicly funded contemporary Gallery, Oriel Mostyn in Llandudno and more recently has been involved with lively workshops at Wales' Millennium Centre, Cardiff.

  Exhibiting work at various Galleries across Wales: appearing on S4C’s programme Wedi Tri, to discuss his art project & exhibition on Mabinogi at The Welsh Gold Centre, Tregaron, Tonnau, Pwllheli, Off The Wall, Llandaf etc

· Several projects & commissions for individuals & businesses over the years, such as Ogwen Publishers, Bangor

· Annual commissions for charity auctions at various locations in Wales

·     Recognition for illustrations for book covers (e.g. Kit Cope Rides the High Country) events posters, personal commisions for  individuals and various design projects which enhance his personal profile & portfolio.

·   He has established contact with several internationally based artists over the past years and enjoys visiting and collaborating with them on projects

In his artistic practice, Gerallt has more recently been focusing upon personal & contemporary themes in society, the psychological effects of new media in shaping our pre occupations & obsessions. His passion & future ambition is to continue developing personal artistic techniques & skills through developmental projects at an international level, gaining experience through co-operation, discussion & exploration with other artists, working in similar & other media.
